“Look at what Person A is doing.”

“Watch how he/she does that.”

“Check out what they’re doing.”

“Take a day off today - it won’t kill you.”

If you’ve ever been told any one of these lines before (or told them to your child/athlete), then you may very well be falling victim to one or more confidence killers!

And the toughest part is that we’re always taught to compare ourselves to others as athletes.

Think about it - you’re told by your coaches to watch how another player does something, you’re constantly pushed by your teammates to compete with them, sometimes you have a parent comparing you to others without even knowing it, etc.

Now although it’s said out of good intent, here’s the reality of what it does to you as an athlete:

  • Causes you to chase results

  • Makes you look to external validation

  • Causes you to second guess yourself

  • Causes you to feel “less than”

And what does this do to most athletes that we serve?

Makes them lose confidence.

I can’t tell you the countless athletes that I work with who talk to me about this paradigm they’ve built around comparing themselves to others - all their lives they’ve been taught to use others as a measure of success.

And the truth?

It’s not your fault!

It’s actually part of the culture of the game - think about it - you’re constantly taught to use others as a way to see if you’re successful or not.

You’re constantly taught that you need to “observe how others on your team are doing” so that you can do the same.

Coaches and parents are constantly rewarding people publicly, through shout outs and applause, whenever they do something right.

It’s actually become a learned trait.

And the second truth?

It’s not their fault either!

They don’t know any better - they’ve only been taught this since, well, forever.

Think - when was the last time a coach told you to measure you against yourself?

When was the last time you were told that nothing else matters other than your progress?

Rarely ever.

That’s why we created this weeks YouTube video - it’s the 10 mistakes that athletes (and parents/coaches) make when trying to build confidence.

These 10 mistakes are ones that I’ve extracted from the athletes that we work with and have taken from the countless one on one conversations I’ve had since 2015.

This stuffs real.

And I’ll tell you - these 10 things are the reason I’ve seen some athletes succeed, and some fail drastically.

And it’s why we created this video - to make sure that you don’t fall into the same traps as them.
