What’s it take to be one of the most important players on the team?

This past week I was watching the new Netflix show, “Receiver” (if you haven’t checked it out, you should…it’s always fun to learn more about the people we work with…to some degree…even if it’s Netflix produced).

And as I was watching it really struck me - there’s something that all of these players have that make them one of the most important players on the team.

It wasn’t talent - if there’s one thing that pro sports has taught me it’s that everyone is talented at the top level.

It wasn’t “God given ability” - yes, I believe that everyone is blessed with “gifts,” however I believe we all hone in on those gifts to bring them to life.

And it wasn’t opportunity - everyone in that show who was featured evidently worked to get to where they were; nothing was handed to them and nothing was of “fortunate circumstance.”

The one thing that made these featured athletes important?

Consistency.

Were they the stand out every single game?

Nope.

Was there effort there every single night, on every single play, and in every single rep of every single practice?

You bet.

And what did it do for them?

It brought them steady, consistently, and daily results that eventually added up to one big massive one.

So why does this work?

Well, there’s something called the compounding effect, and without explaining it in nerdy terms - think of it like a snowball.

It starts small, then you start to roll it in the snow, and as you keep rolling it, it keeps getting bigger, and bigger, and bigger.

And every time you roll it, it keeps getting bigger.

Now here’s where the magic happens - if you stay still, the snowball won’t grow.

So what’s the differentiator?

Consistent rolling - or in sports terms - consistent forward progress.

Aka - showing up every single day with the intention to give your all, get better, and improve.

And here’s the best part - I’ve seen this work with all the athletes that we work with!

So long as you make constant progress to keep consistency moving, and working, toward getting better every day, you can literally become the most important player in the room.

Why?

Well two reasons: for one - most players around you aren’t doing that.

Think about this for a second, you’re sitting somewhere taking the time to read this email because you decided to opt into an email list to build your mental game.

Do you really think there are many other athletes doing that?

No.

Secondly - most people try to cheat the process.

Meaning: they get better from Monday-Wednesday, but are stagnant Thursday-Sunday.

So even if they think they’re constantly getting better, they’re not.

Now here’s the thing - is it easy to be this consistent for 7 days per week?

Not really.

Think about it - that means even on weekends you need to do something small to get better.

However, is this why only a select few are able to be the most important in the room?

Absolutely.

And this is where I’ll challenge you too - if you’ve said you want to be one of the best players on the team, are you making this constant daily improvement?

That’s something for you to answer.
