“I just feel like I’ve lost it all - like I can’t remember how to do things. It’s like I’ve completely forgotten my process, or what works, and I’m just questioning everything now,” he said.
“It’s like I forgot everything. It’s like I don’t know who I am anymore.”
So I sat there and thought about things for a sec, then asked, “And who were you before?”
“One of the best players in the NHL,” he said.
“And what did that guy do?” I asked.
“Well, he moved his feet, got to the net, and shot to score,” he said. “But that’s not the issue!! I know what I need to do.”
“Then why don’t you do it?,” I asked.
“I don’t know, it’s like I just forget,” he said.
“Well obviously you don’t forget”, I said. “You just told me everything you need to do! So what’s really holding you back? Either you don’t know what to do, or don’t trust yourself to do it.”
“I guess I don’t really trust myself to do it,” he said.
And that was the in.
“I guess since coming back to the team I just got away from doing the things that make me successful. Summer was easy, I was home, things were calm, and I didn’t have to worry about anything,” he said.
“I know, and things were easier and life was smoother, right?”, I asked.
“Exactly!! So what do it do?”, he asked.
“Simple,” I said, “You get back to doing the things that made you successful and confident. That daily work, those little habits, those were way more important than you thought.”
Within a week, our NHLer was back to where he had to be.
And the funny part is that this is a common and real thing when it comes to athletes and their success!
And maybe you’ve found yourself in this situation before: you do things well in the summer, get back to the stressful team environment, then all of a sudden you throw away all your good habits.
And then poof!
All the hard work, all the “smooth flowing,” is gone - why is that?
Well, it’s not because you lost anything - it’s because you ditched your habits.
And those quality habits are what allow you to be your best.
It’s NOT the team environment.
It’s NOT the coaches.
It’s YOU.
You are in control!
And if you ditch those habits, then you’ll ditch your results.
Habits are your destiny - and I fully believe in this statement.
If you have quality habits, you’ll have quality results.
If you have poor habits, then you’ll have poor results.
It’s really that simple.
If you want to change your life, simply raise the standards of your habits.
You don’t need to be perfect, you just need to be intentional.
Don’t cheat the process - it’ll show itself to you on game days.
This past week we launched our “How To Build Confidence for Athletes” series on YouTube where we give away all the secrets that we use with our pros.
