“Here’s the truth - the season is right around the corner. You’re not doing everything that you can to be successful, and the reality is that if you continue at this pace, you’re going to have a horrible season. You’re not in the best shape you can be. You’re skipping workouts. And you’re doing the things that’ll get you sent down after camp.”
I had to take a harsh tone.
The silence was deafening - I was wondering if I crossed a line, but at this point I had to go with it.
I was coming from a good place - I was here to help.
After about 20 seconds, my athlete replied, “You’re right. So what do I need to do?”
So, we broke down all the things this athlete had to do over the course of the next 4 weeks so that he could salvage his offseason and make it into one that was memorable.
This was a major breakthrough - a tough one, but a necessary one.
My job isn’t to go along with all the things my athletes tell me; instead, it’s to challenge them and be their second pair of eyes.
Sometimes it’ll be harsh, but I’m there to be their objective point of view.
But what’s the lesson in all of this?
Most athletes have “self bias blinders” on (or at least, that’s what we call them)!!
These are the blinders that most athletes have where they think that they’re doing enough, but really they aren’t.
And I’m not speaking to the over workers either (that’s a whole other email), but instead I’m speaking to those who think that their work is quality work, but really it’s not.
And maybe you fit into this category at times:
You go to workouts half-a**ing it
You know you can give more, but you just give enough
You skip workouts on a Friday in the offseason because, well, there’s always next week
And I’m not saying these are the exact behaviours - but take the patterns for what they are.
Excuses.
And these excuses will either make or break your career - no matter the level you’re at.
Your one job is to empty the tank every single day.
Some days, you’ll only have 10% left in the tank - give it.
Other days, you’ll have 100% - give it.
The purpose isn’t to “show up to training” and “get a workout in” - you’re an elite athlete - training is meant to either take you a step closer to the athlete you want to be, or not.
And if you’re like the rest of the athletes that I work with, then chances are you’re here to do something great.
This is my big call to you today - not because I’m saying you’re “under training,” but instead because I want to be that second pair of eyes for you.
Every day you must be able to leave your training sessions confident in the fact that you took a step closer to being the athlete that you want to be.
And if you aren’t, then now’s the time to change.
Now, if you want to really put this into play, then apply to work with us in a one on one coaching program.
We’ll customize an approach that guarantees you results within your first session, or you don’t pay!

Until next time - stay resilient!

Every athlete needs to hear this.
The silence was deafening - I was wondering if I crossed a line, but at this point I had to go with it.
